I went to the McDonald that is closest to my house. I ordered a small hamburger with 4 pickles on it, and a small French fries with no salt from the dollar menu. It took them a couple of steps to finish this special order. 2 people got involved and it took them less than 4 minutes to complete the order. I was treated very nicely during ordering and while I was waiting. We just didn’t chat. She told me that they need some time for the fries to be done. The order was completely correctly and completed.
After I witness the management process they made, I will give them all an A-, and there are many reasons. I was kind of nerves before I order, because I thought they are going to think that I am weird and look at me differently. They might think that I am making their job harder and harder, and freak out. I walked into McDonald and I was standing about 5 feet away from the counter, thinking of which cashier is nice enough to finish this crazy order. Everything changed, just before I went up to one of the counter. I heard “May I take your order?” There was this 40+ years old lady smiling at me. I can’t believe it, she was smiling. I can’t believe someone actually enjoy working in McDonald and has a smile as big as hers. I started to order; she took it very seriously and listened very closely. She kept her smile and didn’t change her face expression when I was ordering. We didn’t chat much. After I paid, she turned around to get my order together. I saw her walked to the back and said “I want 4 pickles in that burger.” to one of the employees working in the back. I was surprise that she did that, because I usually see cashier yelling loudly to the back. After that, she walked to the fryer, and checked on the fries, and walked back to me. She said “Your fries are almost done, others are salted so you have to wait, sorry” I was very surprise again because she apologize and asked me to wait. While I was waiting she started to take the other customers order. I was watching her. She treated other customers very nicely too. She treated them all the same. I waited about a minute then she called me and said “Sir, here is your order.” Her communications was very good with all her workers, and she was very responsible. I think she was afraid that her workers will mess up the order, so she decided to double check and did the fries by herself.
If I am brought in as a consultant to McDonald’s to help them improve their efficiency, I will raise the salary of the lady who helped to complete this special order. She did a very good job. I believe that nothing is perfect, so I think there is always space for improvement. One thing I think she can improve is to interact with the customer, or chat a little bit. On the other hand, I think she gave me my space and I felt comfortable, so I think she did a really good job. McDonald always wanted people to go back and eat there again. I never go to a McDonald like this one before. She makes me want to go back and eat there again. The second way to improve their efficiency is to set up microphones between the cashier and the people working at the back. In this case, instead of walking to the back to make sure the person knows what she wants, she can just talk to him thru the microphone. Over all, she did a really good job and made me want to give her an even crazier order and see how she will react next time.
I was very impress by the lady. She treated me like there is nothing to worry about after I order. She was smiling, taking my order seriously, double check I got what I wanted after all, and she treated everyone with the same attitude. I learn many things from her during this exercise. People can be very happy on what they do. After this exercise, I asked myself “Why is she working in McDonald.” She can be working in some better places, because she will be very successful with the positive attitude she has. I think many people can be successful if they have her attitudes toward their career.
